FAQs
Acupuncture is a time-honored healing practice that restores balance in the body by stimulating specific points along energy pathways (meridians) with fine needles.
This technique activates natural healing processes and is supported by modern science, which shows that acupuncture enhances nervous system function, boosts circulation, and releases natural pain relievers, linking traditional methods with contemporary medical understanding.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a treatment where thin needles are placed into specific areas of the body, usually staying in for 10-20 minutes depending on the condition being treated.
How does acupuncture work?
It stimulates nerves in muscles, skin, and tissues, triggering the release of endorphins and serotonin, altering how the brain perceives pain. It also affects various body systems, like circulation, hormones, and digestion, which can improve overall well-being.
What is medical acupuncture?
Medical acupuncture is carried out by a trained healthcare professional after a thorough assessment and diagnosis, complementing traditional medical treatments.
Is acupuncture the same as dry needling?
While both use fine needles, dry needling focuses on muscles, particularly trigger points, to relax them. Acupuncture targets specific points to affect various body systems, promoting natural healing.
What conditions can acupuncture help with?
Acupuncture can alleviate pain from conditions like chronic back and neck pain, migraines, jaw disorders, and knee arthritis. It's also used for post-surgery nausea, shoulder pain, overactive bladder, and allergic rhinitis.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, it's generally very safe when performed by qualified professionals. Serious side effects are extremely rare, occurring in less than 1 out of 10,000 treatments. Only sterile, single-use needles are used.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects are uncommon but can include drowsiness, minor bleeding, or bruising. In rare cases, symptoms may briefly worsen after treatment, but this is typically a positive sign.
Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much thinner than injection needles. While you may feel a slight prick or tingling, these sensations generally fade quickly, indicating the treatment is working.
What if I’m afraid of needles?
Laser acupuncture is available, using light to stimulate points without piercing the skin. Eye protection is provided during this procedure.
How long is a session?
Your first appointment lasts 90 minutes to allow for a full assessment and discussion. Follow-up sessions are around 45 minutes and focus on adjusting your treatment based on the progress observed.
